India Puts Pressure on Canada to Recall 41 Diplomats, Trudeau Gets Foreign Ministry's Attention
According to a report in the 'Financial Times,' India has clearly stated to Canada that they must recall their additional 41 diplomats from India by October 10.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has responded by saying that their focus is to reduce the number of Canadian diplomats in India, as their presence here is quite high, and they frequently interfere in India's internal affairs.
Amid the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs held a weekly press conference on Thursday.
During the press conference, the spokesperson for the Ministry, Arindam Bagchi, stated that India has a significant number of Canadian diplomats in New Delhi compared to Canada. This needs to be reduced.
In fact, just two days ago, the British newspaper 'Financial Times' reported that India has given Canada an ultimatum to recall their 41 diplomats by October 10.
India has clearly stated that even after the specified time, if these diplomats remain in India, all their privileges will be revoked.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had accused India of possibly being involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023 while addressing the Canadian Parliament on September 18. Since Trudeau's serious allegations, diplomatic tensions between the two countries have continued.
Focus on reducing the number of Canadian diplomats: Ministry of External Affairs
Responding to a question about the ongoing diplomatic dispute with Canada, Arindam Bagchi mentioned that discussions are ongoing between the two countries.
Having an equal number of diplomats in both countries is essential. He also said that it depends on Canada which diplomats they choose to keep with their High Commission.
When asked if the reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats might affect the issuance of visas by the Canadian High Commission in India, Bagchi replied, "It depends on Canada which employees they choose for their High Commission. Our concerns are related to achieving equality in diplomatic presence."
He further explained that India is currently focusing on two things: ensuring a conducive environment for Indian diplomats in Canada and achieving equality in diplomatic capacity.
Canada to decide who to recall: Ministry of External Affairs
After the 'Financial Times' report, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had stated that Canada does not want to escalate tensions with India. Canada will maintain responsible and constructive relations with India.
Addressing a related question, Arindam Bagchi stated, "We are looking at achieving an equal number of diplomats in both countries. We are looking at the facts.
There are many Canadian diplomats in India. Our sole focus is to have an equal number of diplomats in both countries. Now, it's up to Canada to decide which diplomats will remain with their High Commission.
