Selling Your Old Phone? One Mistake Could Land You in Jail
Before selling your old smartphone, make it a legal transaction. Failure to do so could result in police tracking you down and even landing you in jail if it's used for fraudulent activities or criminal acts. Create a sales agreement with the buyer, including phone number, address, IMEI number, and model number details. The payment can be in cash, by check, or online.
Many of us sell our old phones to friends, family, or acquaintances. We reset the smartphone and then sell it to someone for a sum of money. But did you know that this act could get you into serious legal trouble?
Importance of Creating Legal Proof
If you sell a smartphone with legal proof and that phone is used to send threatening messages or engage in fraudulent or criminal activities, the police can trace it back to your address because the phone is registered in your name. Without legal proof, you won't be able to prove your innocence in front of the police or in court. In such situations, you might end up in jail.
What to Do
Before selling your phone, create legal proof that you are selling your smartphone. You will need to have a sales agreement on stamp paper. This agreement should include the name of the seller, phone number, and address. Additionally, it should contain information about the IMEI number and model number of the phone. Furthermore, include the date of the sale and the payment method, whether it's cash, check, or online.
Note: If you have legal proof, you can prove your innocence. It's advisable to get a sales proof, also known as a seller-buyer agreement, from a court.
