Asia Cup 2023: Serious Questions Raised About Suryakumar Yadav's Selection Despite Poor Record
Suryakumar Yadav, the star T20 cricket batsman, has been included in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023. This time, the Asia Cup will be played in the 50-over format.
Suryakumar Yadav In Asia Cup 2023:
On Monday (August 21), the BCCI announced the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2023. The 17-member Indian team includes the number one T20 international batsman, Suryakumar Yadav. Surya's inclusion in the squad has surprised former Australian player and former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach, Tom Moody. Moody called Surya lucky.
Surya's performance in One Day Internationals (ODIs) has been a big question right from the start. While he has been aggressive in T20 internationals, Suryakumar Yadav hasn't performed exceptionally well in the ODI format. Surya has played 26 ODIs so far, scoring only 511 runs at an average of 24.33, with just 2 half-centuries to his name.
Talking about the Indian team, Tom Moody said, 'I think it's lucky for the player Suryakumar Yadav that he is in that team. I know he's a player we all enjoy watching, but he still has to master the 50-over format. He has played about 20 matches, and he is still finding his way back.'
Tom Moody went on to say, 'He's a genius in T20 cricket. But 50-over cricket is an entirely different format, and he hasn't cracked it yet. You know, I don't think he'll do it at the last minute.'
Tom Moody also revealed the other options that could have been considered in place of Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Moody said, 'For me, there are several better options. I would prefer to see young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal in the team. And I would play a wrist spinner in that position. You know another wrist spinner.'
